Youth+Internet=??

1. How many hours do you go online everyday? What do you usually do in the online world?
Averagely 6 hours per day. I am an ICT student in Form 5 so no doubt that I would have lots of assessment to be completed. I could find borderless informations through the Internet in just a click. But borderless information at time can be negative because it often creates problems such as illegal gambling, computer crimes, information theft, fraud and slander. I share opinions and informations through discussion groups and forums in the cyber world. Besides, by using Internet, I connect to people around the world easily. I often connect to others through Instant Message (IM) such as Microsoft Messenger, Skype or AIM and social networks such as Facebook and Friendster.

2. When you go online and interact with other users, do you use any nickname/alias profiles online? Tell us why you use it or don’t use it.
I do use my nickname, CK, to interact with other users online. That is the main security measures for individual when using the Internet service. I have the right to deny or restrict the collection and use of information about me. We might not know other users on the Cyber World is a hacker who unauthorized used of my properties. For example, transfer payments to my account even when I did not purchase anything online. I would use my real name when interacting with friends I really know as in schoolmates and people who I really met in person before.

3. Have you become good friends with people you first met online? Tell us stories of how you make friends in the online world. How do you know whether to trust them or not?

With a word, "HI". That's the basic for individual to start a conversation with a person you first met especially online. That will be the first impression you may give others. I joined lots of discussion groups and forums online. Being a member in discussion group and forums must be very interruptive. Well, we first start to interrupt other users topic with an introduction of yourself. The began to discuss about a topic where everyone disagree or agree with. As the discussion began to develop, the development of trust on each other will develop as well. In a short period of discussion, trust is developed and it leads to good friends. Then we began to have discussion in person as in we interact in the real world and not online anymore. Companies such as Yakult and Julie's Biscuit often gave payment to us for our discussion session in their office.

4. Tell us if your parents monitor what you access online? Is it effective, or do you know ways around the controls? What do your parents think about you going online all the time?

My parents never monitor what I access online. This is mainly because I'm a grown up Youth and able to think rationally. My parents believe I would have self-control accession informations through the Internet. Previously, they will be worrying about the negative impact of Internet Information on society such as borderless information because it often encourage people to access pornography and violence web sites. But throughout the period where I first touch a computer till now, they began to let go of the worries that bothers them and my parents even got me a personal Apple MacBook (laptop) for my ICT assessment use. They understood the need of Internet for my assessment to surf web sites such as Google.com, Wikipedia, Yahoo Answer, WikiHow and so on. Besides, they knew I would be chatting with my fellow friends online and going in to social networks. By the way, even my parents have a Facebook and MSN account!

5. Do you think the online world has made you to become more disconnected with your friends?
Definitely NO! If online world has made me more disconnected with friends, then I could picture how disconnected me and my friends are in reality world. If you have a friend migrated to places far far away from you, how can you always get connected with that particular friend? Well, Cyber world is the fastest and most efficient way to connect to others. With the Internet, news or message are sent via e-mail to anyone efficiently. With the capability of broadband and speed of connection on the Internet, any information can be traveled faster. Furthermore, the Internet has low communication cost. With the Internet, we do not have to pay any basic service provided in the Internet. So, the cost of the connection to the Internet is relatively cheap. With that reason, we could connect to our friends more often and have a nice chat through the Internet. Lets give it an example, calling your friend using a handphone costs minimum RM0.15 per minute depending on the service provider, the longer you chat, the more faster your phone bill rises. But with Internet, you can call your friends through Skype which don't cost you a single cent at all. So, what makes you think the Cyber World has made you to become more disconnected with your fellow friends?
